Poetry: Impossible

I watched him tell that man to sell it all.

Even when Jesus spelled it out

Still we didn’t understand.

I watched him command a cripple to stand.

He needs healing not pardon.

It seemed an afterthought.

When your sins are washed away,

What more could a man want?

Could the paralyzed walk home?

Impossible.

I watched him charge the very waves be still.

We were so wildly afraid,

With storms crashing all around.

And he slumbered peacefully.

No doubt he was quite weary.

Could the wind and waves obey?

Impossible.

I watched him dab spit on a blind man’s eyes.

And still my eyes couldn’t see.

But plain as the nose on my face

The promised healer was here.

And he gave those eyes sight.

Could the blind behold the Christ?

Impossible!

I watched him turn two loaves into dozens.

The day was growing quite late,

And we were getting hungry.

We could scarcely feed ourselves.

And there were thousands of mouths.

Could we ever feed them all?

Impossible.

I watched him compel the demons tremble.

More than once, those monsters quaked.

They tortured desperate souls.

They hated and they feared him.

More than we did, they knew him.

Could a man force the devil flee?

Impossible.

I watched him walk upon the rolling sea.

I dared to walk it with him.

Those great surges were so vast.

And I knew I was so small.

Even failing, he saved me.

Could the waters bear a man?

Impossible!

I watched him tell that man to sell it all.

Even when Jesus spelled it out

Still we didn’t understand.

Oh, but time and time again

He authored the impossible.

Could a rich man be redeemed?

Impossible!

I watched him be fettered by lesser men.

I’d even proclaimed him God.

But when charged with knowing him,

I didn’t once hesitate.

I swore, cursed, “I know him not!”

Could a traitor be restored?

Impossible…

I watched him die upon that cursed hill.

I could never take it back.

Unless he was so much more

Than I had ever assumed.

“Nothing is impossible…”

Could it be that he was God?

It’s…possible.
